What you need to know if cannabis becomes legal in New Zealand

If New Zealanders vote to legalise cannabis, there will be a cap on how much is grown every year, set by an authority that will also divide the quota between licenced growers.

The government has released the final version of the Cannabis Legalisation and Control Bill. It is at the centre of two referendums that will be voted on at this year's election.

That same Cannabis Regulatory Authority will decide the potency of cannabis products, who gets licences, where commercial premises can set up and it will also collect tax.

Justice Minister Andrew Little told Checkpoint the cap will be set according to estimates of current use.
