Tourists who dock on the shores of Aotea Great Barrier Island could soon be turned away, with some locals preparing to set up a checkpoint there during alert level 2.

Tourists who dock on the shores of Aotea Great Barrier Island could soon be turned away, with some locals preparing to set up a checkpoint there during alert level 2. 

Checkpoint organiser Kelly Klink says with no hospital on the island and elderly making up a large proportion of the population, it is a necessary step to keep the island safe. 

But police have made it absolutely clear they will not support it.
