Melbourne Transportation Tips | how and where to buy Myki Transport Card in Melbourne

Melbourne Transportation Tips

First of all, a reminder that you must buy a Myki Transport Card before you can use public transport in Melbourne.

3.1 Introduction to the Myki Transport Card
3.1.1 Introduction to Myki Transport Card Types

There are four types of Myki card: Full Fare, Special, Child and Senior.

Full Fare: For people over 19 years old (purchase fee: $6).

Special Concession: This is a very strict purchase that is not available to the average tourist.

Children: Children between the ages of 5 and 18 years old (passport required), children under 4 years old do not need a ticket ($3.00 for card).

Seniors: It's a very strict regulation, the general tourists can't buy it.

Don't try to ride without a ticket, and don't try to buy a child's ticket at the expense of an adult's, as you will be fined a terrible fine!

Public Transport Victoria requires users to do the three "T's": Touch On, Touch Off and Top Up. However, since the traditional Metcard system only requires a card to be inserted into the train to punch a ticket, users often forgot to swipe their cards when the system was first deployed from Melbourne. Yarra Tram recommends that streetcar users use the tram without the need to swipe their cards when commuting in Zone 1 to guarantee a minimum deduction (the Zone 1 fare).
