Average house rental $528, and this will be very average. Total per annum nz$27,300. You’ll probably be paying your own water bill on top as well.

Power, around 300 per month for a couple of people $3600 pa

Food $200 a week $10,400 pa

Home pc with wifi, standard (not fast) broadband with 40 gig cap $960 pa

mobile phone plan unlimited with 22 gig $1200 pa.

We’re up to around $44k already. And that’s without vehicle costs… you need a car to get around. For work, you may be able to use public transport. Factor in quite a few dollars for this. So for basics with a decent phone plan you may survive on $50k.

For a decent life with a few luxuries I would make a guess at $150k.

Wages here aren’t the best, for instance about three years ago an acquaintence relocated to NZ from Australia with the same firm as a forkhoist driver. His rate dropped from over A$30 per hour to under NZ$20. And consider trying to live a decent life on that!

The guy who said at least $200K is crazy. That’s actually insane. $100K easily passes with flying colours. If you’re flatting, wise with money (not always buying the most expensive stuff but doing a reasonable amount of price-comparing), don’t have kids you can be comfortable with ~$50,000 p.a; having good internet, travelling to another country once every two years but doing smaller trips inbetween all the necessary stuff with enough wiggle room. You’ll need to put a bit of effort in though so $60,000 would leave you in a far more comfortable position.

With a partner and kids You’ll probably want at least $100,000 between the both of you unless you own a home with a low mortgage in which case you could do with less.

There are always exceptions. Different areas are more expensive like Central Auckland and the North Shore. The further away from Central Auckland the better, usually. With the amounts I’ve listed you shouldn’t be in poverty unless you’re very frivolous but you may have to keep on your toes.

Well I’m no expert but according to recent research the living wage in NZ is approx $20 per hour.

For a comfortable life here in Auckland I’d say (depending on life style etc) you’d be looking at an annual salary of around $60–70k.

I know families living on under 80k annually and living pretty comfortable and stress free lives.

It really depends, but you’ll be renting on those kind of salaries, lets not pretend housing is cheap here…
