“Why can’t I create a WeChat account? During the security check it says I need a friend to verify me by either scanning my QR code or going into their settings, but I don’t have a friend that has WeChat.”

There are some very good reasons for this.

It makes it extremely difficult for scammers and trolls to get a WeChat account. This makes for a superior and safer experience for real users.

WeChat has no desire to build an entire class of dead user accounts. If you don’t have any actual Chinese friends, acquaintances or business contacts, aren’t planning a trip to China, aren’t wishing to take language lessons, etc, then you really don’t need a WeChat account. If all you want to do is install it and explore it, to see what it’s about, you are not the type of user WeChat wants or needs at this time.

WeChat is not a dating App for foreigners with an Asian fetish (Yellow Fever). If a person’s goal for joining WeChat is to find a Chinese GF or BF this, not the type person wanted.

If you really want a WeChat account then you need to be willing to make some Chinese acquaintances first. Don’t try to put the horse before the cart. It’s not that hard, even if you live in some rural area. Join Facebook first. There are plenty of Chinese and Chinese groups/ pages there. Chinese making the effort (VPN) to be on Facebook are likely open to having foreign friends.

Obviously their rules indicate that you cannot join as a ‘solo’ user. They’re placing the condition on users that they must be ‘’linked’ to an existing user - either by knowing them personally - or by ‘distance knowledge’.

Wechat is a private social media network. If you don’t have any friends there is no point having a Wechat account.
