#1 Tamarama beach

The crowd it attracts is itself a testimony to beach’s beauty. A haven for surfers and favourite for locals, swimming is best avoided here - given it’s also one of Sydney’s most dangerous.

#2 Bronte beach

The best way to put it is - Bronte and chill. Even the ocean is laid back with its own sea pools that offer a secure swimming experience. The parkland nearby features families hosting barbecue cook-offs on weekends.

#3 Shelly beach

Protected from the ocean swell, here’s where you take out your paddleboards and scuba gears.

#4 Milk Beach

With the air of exclusivity reserved for non-summer months, Milk beach is famed for Sydney’s city line views. Most popular among kayakers and party goers, especially during summer.

I have a few favourites:

Best swimming beach on the harbour : Nielsen’s Park Vaucluse (they have nets to keep sharks away and I used to go there during my University days). It’s a close guarded secret amongst the locals.

Most famous amongst tourist and Instagrammers: Bondi and Manly

Most famous Sydney walk : Spit to Manly with a stop along Castle Rock which I really love ! It’s a tiny patch of sand with some interesting reefs and rocks.

Another swimmable beach is Forty Baskets which is peaceful and well loved by locals out walking with their dogs.

Balmoral is lovely for families including young toddlers and likewise the little known Rosherville reserve which also goes by the name Chinamans Beach.
