When I read, hear some news and enquiries about Uber, I have my fixed feelings.

With Uber you can neither get rich nor make a decent living. Uber manipulates the fare prices whenever they want to suit them and you must be prepared to accept their frequent 'Grim realities'! Recently they made a significant reduction on their fares by reducing 15%, making the drivers work harder and longer hours so that they can make the same amount of money. They still keep 20% of the fare earned by their so called 'Driving Partners'(!) And yet they still give the drivers 80% and don't forsake their 20% 'Easy Money' a little!

In England they started to deduct 25% and they might well bring the same rule here in Australia. If you are going to work between 8-12 hours a week, it is alright. But I wouldn't commit to Uber as a full-time driver. Also do NOT ever drive at nights especially over the weekends. They can vomit in your car, (Uber does NOT indemnify you for the costs!) they can abuse you, asking personal questions and give you low ratings coupled with bad comments and Uber wouldn't stand by you in most cases. You lodge your complaints to Uber and the best you can expect from them is a 'prepopulated paragraph', sharing your sorrow(!) That is all! Also if your turnover is say $1,500.00 in a week (You must work at least 60 hours for this amount!) At least $500.00 would go towards your petrol expenses and Toll Charges (Assuming that you will be driving a medium size car, i.e. 2.4lt)

Moreover, you will have to get your car serviced more frequently thus on average you will have to put another $100.00 aside for this purpose. You will have to change your tyres more frequently, expensive costs and guaranteed $1,000.00 fines in a year, too!

Is that the lifestyle you would want to enjoy?

The Management are the most ignorant ones (Apart from a few exceptions, majority of them are under educated ) , namely they sit on their back and expect from you to make money for them! Once your rating drops below 4.6, then they immediately deactivate your account without even bothering to discuss the matter with you first. You will, however see many riders well below 4 star ratings and yet they can get away with it! They can (Some night riders that is) increase the volume of the radio deliberately whilst you drive them and shout to annoy you. Even worse, a good few of them smuggle alcoholic drinks (Which is illegal) and you tell them not to do so, lose concentration and you will be the one to be blamed! Here I am not saying all of them are like that but you need two or three incidents like that a week and get from them only one star and a bad few comments, that is it! (I suggest you plan your 'Exit Strategy' beforehand!)

My suggestion would be not to work more than 15 hours a week (But do not forsake your social life, 12 hours spreading into two days would be ideal!) And make sure that you ONLY DRIVE DAYTIME, NO LATER THAN 10pm AT THE VERY LATEST! You can make $400.00, take away from that $100.00 for the costs and $300.00 would allow you to have some sumptuous holiday(s) for two in a year. Or you might as well save this money towards the purchasing of a new or a newer car.

But under no circumstances should you throw yourself at the mercy of the management in Melbourne!

By the way, you MUST notify your Insurance company that you are doing ride sharing and be prepared to be loaded for this extra expense, too!

Is that the type of endurance you are prepared to undertake? If so, I suggest you think TWICE IF NOT THREE TIMES!

we make 80% of whatever the total for our week has been. The total for the week of course will depend on how many hours you decide to drive and how busy the busiest nights are - that's when you can really stack the scrilla.

I've been driving Uber in Brisbane since the beginning of the year and like to drive a few hours of a busier night (Friday or Sunday) and a couple hours through the weekdays. I earn on average $200 for 10 hours.

There's people who rack up 30+ hours across the weekend and can earn over $1000 gross. After deducting fuel and Uber's 20% it comes down to around $800 total for say 33 hours so you're looking at $24 per hour.

Uber are also guaranteeing rates during certain hours. If you fall short due to a lack of pickups they will top up your account. The best hours are of course late Saturday nights where you can get a guaranteed $40 per hour for three hours. That's if you can put up with the traffic. The drunkards I'm fine with, but the chaos can really test one's patience.

For what you might earn in Melbourne or Sydney really depends on how saturated the markets are now with Uber drivers. But I would bet that during the peak hours you would be earning more and for a longer period of time due to the greater populations.

For the record the best I've done is $47 in one trip that took 20 minutes and $87 in one hour (both before deductions).
