Canberrans are being reminded to avoid wild mushrooms after a young child who ingested a death cap mushroom was hospitalised.

Canberrans are being reminded to avoid wild mushrooms after a young child who ingested a death cap mushroom was hospitalised.

Acting ACT chief health officer Dr Vanessa Johnston said the child presented to a hospital emergency department on Friday.

ACT Health could not confirm the child's condition, but Dr Johnston said it was reminder for people to be careful around wild mushrooms.

"As the name suggests, death cap mushrooms can be deadly and all parts of the mushroom are poisonous whether they have been cooked or not," she said.

"Eating wild mushrooms is just not worth the risk. Don't eat mushrooms you have found in the wild, and only purchase mushrooms from a reputable supplier."

The ACT government undertakes routine site inspections at known, high yielding sites on a weekly basis between February and June.

Death cap mushrooms were on Friday detected around Canberra and removed.

The deadly mushrooms often grow near established oak trees and can easily be mistaken for edible mushrooms.

Wild mushrooms should not be touched with bare hands, and children and animals should be kept away from them.

Anyone who finds mushrooms in their yard should wear disposable gloves to remove and dispose of them.

People should urgently attend an emergency department if they believe they've eaten a wild mushroom.

They should also take any remaining mushroom to the hospital for identification.

Symptoms of poisoning generally occur 6 to 24 hours after eating mushrooms, and include pains, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. view all

Australian researchers have discovered a way to transform the delivery of chemotherapy, potentially curtailing toxic side effects for thousands of cancer patients.

Australian researchers have discovered a way to transform the delivery of chemotherapy, potentially curtailing toxic side effects for thousands of cancer patients.

The key to the world-first find is the use of nanomedicines - drugs hidden within nanoscopic fatty membranes or liposomes - which have the ability to more accurately target tumours rather than surrounding tissue.

Scientists at the University of South Australia say the delivery of frequently used chemotherapy drug 5-FU or Fluorouracil is 100 per cent more effective when administered using an optimised liposomal formulation.

Employing a minimally invasive sampling technique known as micro-dialysis, they have been able to demonstrate the biodistribution of 5-FU in a way not possible with traditional imaging approaches.

Lead researcher and co-director at UniSA's Centre for Pharmaceutical Innovation, Professor Clive Prestidge, says the advance could alter the quality of cancer treatment across the board.

"Chemotherapy is regularly administered to treat many different types of cancers, including breast and colon cancers but one of the major setbacks of 5-FU is that it does not distribute well to tumour issues and can cause high levels of off-target damage," he said.

"As a result, many patients suffer adverse effects and can get very sick during treatment."

Prof Prestidge says liposomal formulations present great opportunities for safer, more effective medications because they prolong the retention of encapsulated drugs.

However optimising them for chemotherapy has long proved a challenge.

"Our micro-dialysis approach is the first to quantify how liposomal-specific delivery of 5-FU can reduce tumour growth with fewer toxic side effects," he said.

"It has the potential to dramatically transform many cancer treatments and deliver better outcomes for people with cancer."

With cancers accounting for almost 10 million - or one in six - fatalities worldwide, about 150,000 new cases are diagnosed in Australia annually.

Chemotherapy is regularly used to treat them, with 5-FU among the most widely used drugs.

Its side effects can include nausea and vomiting, fatigue, hair loss, diarrhoea or constipation, weight fluctuations, frequent infections and mouth sores. view all

Support for mental health will be one the key planks of the federal budget in just over a week's time, Health Minister Greg Hunt says.

Support for mental health will be one the key planks of the federal budget in just over a week's time, Health Minister Greg Hunt says.

Mr Hunt says mental health is one of the four pillars of Australia's long-term national health plan.

The other areas are primary care with a strong focus on access to new medicines and better treatments to aid doctors, support for hospitals and private health insurance, and medical research.

He said there will be a focus on youth suicide.

"Despite all the expectations, because of what we were able to do in tailored support for mental health we had a reduction in suicide in Australia of five per cent in 2020 - we are still waiting on the final figures for 2021," Mr Hunt told Sky News' Sunday Agenda program.

"We want to see it go lower, we want to see it head towards zero."

Details on the mental health support will be released in the March 29 budget.

However, the Morrison government will spend more than $315 million over four years to extend its national ice action strategy in the ongoing fight to reduce the impact of ice, other drugs and alcohol.

This investment comes alongside an additional $27.9 million being committed to support other critical drug and alcohol treatment projects in areas of identified need.

"For too many Australians, illegal drugs are still an insidious scourge on our community, robbing families of their loved ones," Mr Hunt said.

"The Morrison government is committed to building safe and healthy communities, reducing the impacts and harms of drug and alcohol use for individuals, their families and their communities."

National wastewater drug monitoring shows methamphetamine use has reduced for the second consecutive year.

Mr Hunt said while this was a good sign, there is still work to be done.

Additionally, the government is providing $28.1 million to establish a new agency - Genomics Australia - to support the integration of genomic medicine as a standard of healthcare in Australia.

"Genomic health technologies have the potential to reshape clinical practice and change the way we prevent, diagnose, treat and monitor illness throughout each person's life," Mr Hunt said.

Genomics Australia will be chaired by Professor Kathryn North. view all

Victorians looking to retrain for work in the healthcare sector and other in-demand jobs following the pandemic will be offered subsidised and free TAFE courses.

Victorians looking to retrain for work in the healthcare sector and other in-demand jobs following the pandemic will be offered subsidised and free TAFE courses.

Premier Daniel Andrews said the pandemic had highlighted the importance of skilling for the healthcare sector, as well as causing many people to reconsider their careers.

"If you want a job that really matters then now is the time to make a change," he said on Sunday.

The announcement came as Victoria recorded another 6694 cases, but no deaths.

There are 215 people in hospital and 21 in ICU, with six on ventilation.

Some 63.8 per cent of those aged over 18 have received a third vaccine dose.

The 10,000 extra TAFE places announced will cost about $61.6 million but won't only be limited to healthcare courses.

Victoria offers free training at TAFE for select courses for eligible students including people under 20, unemployed people or those looking to reskill and change careers.

About 900 students per year will be able to train at the Kangan Institute's Essendon health hub when it opens in June, with new nursing and pathology simulation labs part of the construction. view all

Police believe they've identified the two bodies found in the Gordonbrook Dam, about 250km northwest of Brisbane, at 3.30pm on Saturday.

"The identities of the couple are yet to be confirmed however they are believed to be a local man aged in his fifties and a local woman aged in her late forties," detectives said in a statement on Sunday.

Their white 2004 Holden Commodore station wagon has also been found parked near the picnic area at the dam.

[Suggestion] Official Chia Blockchain discord server + Chia coin Miners.
Hey guys,

Just a suggestion for the community, I think it would be a great benefit to have a discord for the Chia blockchain. There is one here discord link: https://discord.gg/Mz4SG4KrYN but it seems to be lacking membership.

I know there is an official keybase but discord offers so much more and is completely free. much more moderation options and general flexibility. A lot of other crypto communities have migrated over to it as well so that is another reason to move IMO.

If the slack is going to remain I'd also suggest including it in the subreddit sidebar.

None of the social channels linked in the sidebar offer IM functionality. Now that we have a quite large user base IM, real-time chats are of great benefit and will prevent social channels like Reddit from getting clogged up with the same questions over and over.

Features:

1. Q&A channel: You can ask and get answers about chia blockchain.
2. Miners Category: plots +farm +hardware
3. Developers: dev-general + programming + documentation + hackathons
4. Exchange Marketplace: I wanna sell chia cryptocurrency + I wanna buy chia cryptocurrency

What you get with this Offer

Social Media Marketing (SMM)

for small businesses is a popular topic these days. These are indeed powerful tools in your marketing war chest, but like anything else you need a strategy behind it. Without a social media strategy your time and efforts can and will face plant on the sidewalk of good intentions.

Struggling to find the time to run your social media accounts ?
Want to drive targeted UK Traffic to you social media accounts and your website ?
Have you been let down by your previous social media manager ?

We have managed successfully international brands and businesses from all UK, USA, France, Hong Kong, Germany, China, Australia, Africa, Russia, and Canada.

Effectively running a social media campaign takes careful planning, time and commitment to reach your objectives. Our Social Media Management service takes complete care of your social media presence.

*** I Adopt a Strategy That Works for your Business

We start by establishing your core objectives. Do you want to increase brand awareness? Increase sales? Increase your followers? We’ll spend time learning about your business and then just as importantly, learning about your customers; what makes them tick and how we can engage with them on Social Media.

*** Engagement

There’s little point sending arbitrary tweets into the wild: Every post will be designed with your objectives in mind. Using the latest technology, we’ll also monitor your brand and relevant conversations and engage with relevant users at the right time.

*** Social Growth

Part of our core strategy will be to grow your following. Increased relevant followers lead to increased engagement and more opportunities to reach your objectives. I will work hard to deliver the right message to the right social media users and build a captive audience.

Your account manager will act and work to be your best ambassador to promote your business and generate leads.

This Social Media Management Package will cover two of the following social platforms:

*** TWITTER
*** FACEBOOK
*** LINKEDIN
*** INSTAGRAM
*** GOOGLE PLUS

PS: Suitable for fashion , hospitality , ecommerce, technology , healthcare , beauty , business, cleaning , insurance, finance, education , project management or consulting sectors

Onsite is needed : High Wycombe - Marlow - Reading - Maidenhead - Slough - London - Oxford
