DHL Report: Decoupling of US-China Trade

Newsmegcaicai wrote the post • 0 comments • 193 views • 2023-03-15 16:27 • added this tag no more than 24h

According to DHL's Global Connectedness Index, despite globalization still having resilience in a broader sense after nearly five years of public economic conflict, the US-China trade relationship is beginning to show a "general pattern" of decoupling. According to Bloomberg, US-China trade flow reached a historical record of $690.6 billion in 2022, larger than any other country without a common border. However, deep data analysis reveals that both the US and China have significantly reduced each other's import share, indicating an economic decoupling.

In 2022, China's share of imports into the United States decreased from 21.6% in 2017 to 16.6%, while exports from the United States to China as a percentage of total exports fell from 8.4% in 2017 to 7.3%. DHL's research report cites analysis by the Peterson Institute for International Economics stating that tariffs initiated by former President Trump in 2018 and maintained by President Biden are the main reason for declining US-China trade flows.

By mid-2022, imports of Chinese goods subject to the highest tariffs imposed by the United States had fallen by 22% compared with before the start of the trade war in 2018 but increased by50% during this period when not affected by U.S.tariffs on Chinese imports.

The report analyzed various data including foreign direct investment trends and scientific research cooperation and found that almost all cross-border flows involving China have been decreasing since 2016.However,the report also found little evidence suggesting meaningful decoupling between America’s allies and those countries trading with or allied with China regarding commodity trades view all

The Pentagon increases military spending to deter China.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the US Department of Defense announced plans on Monday to increase military spending. The budget request for fiscal year 2024 proposes a 12% increase in spending on missiles and rockets as well as plans for manufacturing these weapons, reaching $30.6 billion. This is mainly focused on high-end missiles, including hypersonic weapons and defense systems against such weapons, with the goal of countering China's military expansion. The Department of Defense stated that China remains a "growing threat" to the United States.

Just last week, China released its military spending for this year, with an annual budget exceeding RMB 1.5 trillion yuan and increasing at over 7%, which is the fastest growth rate in four years. This has attracted strong attention from outside world.

The Pentagon hopes that this increased military budget will also alleviate inventory shortages exposed by the conflict in Ukraine; they believe that this conflict may weaken US efforts to deter China.

However, Kathleen Hicks, Deputy Secretary of Defense at the US Department of Defense said during a press conference on Monday that procurement levels have reached industry limits and labor and component shortages could hinder delivery dates for purchased weapons. Some analysts also pointed out that the Department of Defense's expenditure plan may face strong resistance in Congress. view all

US officials question the effectiveness of the Middle East agreement facilitated by China.

OthersMetrikin wrote the post • 4 comments • 157 views • 2023-03-15 07:10 • added this tag no more than 24h

Last week, China mediated the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, and reached an agreement, which has drawn attention from the Western world regarding China's influence in the Middle East.

According to The Wall Street Journal, US officials have expressed doubts about whether Iran will comply with the agreement. They also denied that the agreement indicated a weakening of US influence in the Middle East.

However, this agreement still leaves observers wondering if China's influence in the region has surpassed or even replaced that of the United States. Some believe that by allowing China to increase its influence in the Middle East at America's expense, Biden's administration may further reduce its chances of playing a new role on Iran nuclear negotiations.

In addition, China plans to host a summit for Gulf Arab monarchs and Iranian officials in Beijing this year. Analysts point out that this summit reflects huge success for Gulf countries' strategic proximity to China and demonstrates how willing China is to participate in regional affairs beyond commerce and economics. Many Americans and people from Middle Eastern countries originally believed that Chinese interests were mainly focused on economic and commercial matters. view all

Wang Dan: Xi Jinping has eliminated the party, state, and society.

OthersMetrikin wrote the post • 4 comments • 232 views • 2023-03-15 07:05 • added this tag no more than 24h

Recently, Wang Dan, a leader of the 1989 pro-democracy movement and founder of the US think tank "Dialogue China", held a dialogue exchange event at the Hong Kong Community Center in Fremont, California. Wang Dan believes that Xi Jinping's personal dictatorship has transformed China's political system into "Xi's world". Regarding the situation of political prisoners in custody in Hong Kong, Wang Dan called on all sectors to do their best to rescue them.

Wang Dan: Xi Jinping has eliminated the party, state, and society.

At a dialogue session, Wang Dan first pointed out that Xi Jinping's strengthening of personal dictatorship will not only have important implications for China but also for Hong Kong. He said that from last year's 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China to this year's Two Sessions, China's political system has entered "Xi’s world": "The so-called governance by the party no longer exists; the party ruling everything no longer exists; it is now completely Xi’s world."

On March 2nd, Xinhua News Agency reported that according to regulations set by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), members of its Political Bureau Standing Committee and Secretariat as well as members from various organizations such as NPC Standing Committee, State Council and CPPCC National Committee must submit written reports on their work annually to CPC Central Committee General Secretary Xi Jinping. Wang Dan stated that formally speaking, since Xi was elected President by Chinese People's Congresses at all levels in accordance with China’s Constitution he should be reporting his work to them instead: “How come you (Xi) turned things around and made NPC report to you? It shows that Xi Jinping’s centralization power has reached a point where he disregards any basic political rules.”

Wang Dan pointed out that according to China's constitution, the highest organ of state power is the National People's Congress (NPC). However currently both NPC deputies and CPPCC members are required to report their work not only to their respective organizations but also directly back up through CCP hierarchy ultimately reaching General Secretary Xi himself. On one hand this means there is no more separation between government organs and CCP leadership while on another hand it contradicts itself because Politburo Standing Committee Members together with Secretaries constitute CCP Central Leadership which means they are essentially reporting back up through themselves. Wang Dan believes this implies "Xi Jinping has already eliminated even the Party itself. For him, The Central committee is just a facade or signboard; what he really wants is for The Central committee to report its work directly to him."

Wang Dan also mentioned how under Xi Jinping’s suppression civil society in China had been gradually disappearing along with replacing weak Premier Li Keqiang with an even weaker Li Qiang effectively eliminating both state institutions and society altogether: “There have been very few dictators like him throughout human history who have destroyed both country and society entirely… In today’s entire Chinese regime there isn’t any party nor government left – there is only one person named ‘Xi Jingping’. What do we call this? This can be called nothing other than standard imperial rule.”

However Wang Dan believes based on political logic & historical experience personal dictatorship under XI cannot sustain indefinitely - internal coup d'etat remains possible within china given dissatisfaction towards xi jinping personally among ccp insiders & general public alike - similar fate befell past dictators Stalin & Hitler etc.. Furthermore due to global expansionism under xi jinping china faces prospect military conflict against international community- poor handling covid19 pandemic ,public discontentment towards xi jinping , blank paper movement protests , elderly wuhan residents protesting etc., large-scale emigration overseas among middle class reflect increasing societal unrest trend alongside declining authoritarian control ability.

Regarding future prospects facing china wang dan sees three possibilities : if social discontent exceeds authoritarian governance capacity then china may face turning points brought about by collective resistance leading internal division ; if xi jinping 's personal ambition leads war then it would lead decline ccp totalitarian regime ; finally possibility overthrowing xi jinping via coup d'etat inside ccp. view all

DHL Report: Decoupling of US-China Trade

US officials question the effectiveness of the Middle East agreement facilitated by China.

Regarding future prospects facing china wang dan sees three possibilities : if social discontent exceeds authoritarian governance capacity then china may face turning points brought about by collective resistance leading internal division ; if xi jinping 's personal ambition leads war then it would lead decline ccp totalitarian regime ; finally possibility overthrowing xi jinping via coup d'etat inside ccp. view all
