I'd say that having this balance is a learned skill most of the time and the meaning differs from person to person. I've been a software engineer for 7 years and have always been able to balance my job and health, mentally and physically, just fine as far as exercising regularly and eating healthy. This is something I see others struggling with and I can't relate at all. I rarely work more than 40 hours a week and have plenty of free time. On paper it looks like the balance is there. However, there are times where I just want to devote myself to a project or task completely and I cut myself off from everything to do that. This includes connections in my personal life many times. I also travel quite a bit for my job which means I disconnect for those periods of time too. For me the challenge is to balance those personal relationships with my ambition and desire to succeed and improve. Even during those times I don't work more than 40 hours. I just spend more time thinking about those things rather than doing the upkeep on my personal life. Sometimes it isn't about the hours, it's about priorities and how those are balanced.
