Hong Kong and Singapore and a number of other cities use fares based on how many kilometres you travel. Myki fares continue to be based on zones (which now spread across a lot of Victoria) and duration (2-hour, daily, etc.) of travel.
The PTUA believes that distance-based charging has some disadvantages − it may lead to higher fares, and it is quite confusing, because you might not know how much you’ll be charged before you travel.
