The White House looks forward to a call with President Xi, but China says NO
According to Bloomberg, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on Monday (March 13) that the White House will arrange for Biden to speak with Xi Jinping after the closing of China's National People's Congress and the new leadership of the Chinese government takes office. American journalists have also received confirmation from Biden.
Sullivan revealed last week that the White House had such a plan, but no details including specific timing have been given yet.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin responded on Tuesday by saying that necessary communication is maintained between China and the United States, and that communication is valuable in enhancing understanding and managing differences. Communication should not be done just for its own sake.
According to Voice of America, Elbridge A. Colby, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy and Force Development at the US Department of Defense, said in an interview that Sino-US relations are currently zero-sum game; therefore it is unrealistic for Biden administration to propose both competition and cooperation.
Matthew Pottinger, former Deputy National Security Advisor in the United States stated that America should not hold too much hope for reciprocal cooperation with China as China tends to use cooperation as leverage to force concessions from America on Taiwan issues. He also emphasized that China is actually a creator of many problems; thus America should be more realistic.
