Microclots in Long COVID: Investigating its Intricate Relationship

The COVID-19 pandemic was one of the worst periods of modern human history. Within a few days, everything was shut down, and all significant economies witnessed major setbacks. However, the most affected ones were people themselves. Many people lost their lives and loved ones, too. Initially, the symptoms of COVID-19 were minimal, but it was in November 2022 that doctors and scientists found a new hidden symptom. Many COVID-19 patients who recovered from the acute phase of COVID-19 were still experiencing illness and many health issues. Doctors were confused about this thing.
However, one theory was found justiciable behind this chronic illness. And that theory was of microclotting. Hannah Davis, a U.S. COVID patient, was chosen to undergo a long COVID microclots test. The test was completed in New York at Mount Sinai Hospital. Doctors witnessed the sickest production of excessive blood microclots in long COVID-affected patients when the test results came out. As a result, this led to the rise of a new symptom of long COVID illness: microclots

How Microclots Serve as a Symptom of Long COVID Illness?

In late 2021, doctors found that the formation of microclots was one of the symptoms of long-term COVID-19 illness. When an individual gains the COVID-19 virus, the body’s blood vessels start getting affected due to widespread inflammation. Therefore, this inflammation can hinder the delicate balance of the body’s clotting system, resulting in the increased formation of micro clots.

The formation of microclots in high numbers reduces the blood flow (less oxygen) and nutrients, causing tissue damage, weakness, and chronic illness. Even if you’ve recovered from COVID-19, the formation of microclots can persist. That’s why microclots are among the primary symptoms of long COVID illness.

Potential Treatments for Microclots in Long COVID:

It should be noted that no proven treatments have been yet discovered for microclots. Still, many possible treatments are getting broad recognition. Let’s look at the top possible experimental treatments for microclots in long COVID.

HELP Apheresis:

HELP (Heparin-Induced Extracorporeal LDL Precipitation) Apheresis has been performed on thousands of patients, and the result is quite positive in all. This dialysis-like treatment has its origin in Germany, and many other countries are taking notes to provide this in their territories, too.

A study from Pretorius and Kell:

One of the prominent treatments for microclots in long COVID illness is by Pretorius and Kell. They implemented their treatment on 24 patients. In one month, they daily injected antiplatelet and anticoagulant drugs into the patient’s body. Moreover, a PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitor) was also prescribed on a daily basis. After one month, when they took a long COVID microclots test, all symptoms were resolved.

Many hematologists have advised patients not to consider unproven treatments for microclots in long COVID illness, but there is not any option for patients. They can’t just sit around to wait for some genius to treat them. Anything can happen at any time. VanElzakker, a renowned neuroscientist, has perfectly stated, ‘
‘I can’t imagine being in a situation where you’re just supposed to sit around and wait for genius researchers to solve it.’

What’s Next?

Long COVID-19 illness is poising to become a significant medical condition in the future if healthcare systems and governments don’t take the necessary steps. Davis and Pretorius, renowned long-term COVID advocates, believe that immediate actions are needed: increase accessibility to tests, allocate additional funding for extensive research, and initiate clinical trials without delay.
