NEW ZEALAND RESTRICTIONS LIFTED | First day out in Auckland City since lockdown

VideosPeter and Yen wrote the post • 0 comments • 399 views • 2020-07-24 18:14 • added this tag no more than 24h

New Zealand finally loosened lockdown restrictions on 14 May 2020 bringing us down to alert level 2, meaning most shops could reopen again when previously it was pretty much only supermarkets and pharmacies. Cafes and restaurants under level 2 were allowed to have dine-in customers again. Under level 3, only takeaways and deliveries were allowed.

We had been staying home and indoors pretty much ever since we arrived back in NZ in March except for the occasional grocery run and flu jab. Therefore the day after it officially became level 2 in NZ, we decided to head out and take a stroll about Auckland city for an afternoon. We went around visiting Auckland retail stores to see what the situation was like for businesses and give our support where we could.

Peter (and mum) had been in dire need of a good hair cut. Thankfully under level 2, hair dressers could reopen again so we visited our hairdresser Andy who owns Urban Hair Studio. His shop is situated right outside the apartment we use to live in. Andy is a really nice guy so if you're in Auckland CBD and after a fresh cut, visit Urban Hair Studio. You'll need to make an appointment though, he's a very popular guy!

EPISODE 3: Butter Prawns with Egg Floss trick!

There are so many delicious Malaysian dishes but one that we like to order if we see it on the menu is butter prawns! Especially if it comes with egg floss. The most difficult thing to learn how to cook for butter prawns is the tantalizingly salty, sweet, fluffy and crispy egg floss with that beautiful scent of curry leaves but I recently came across an ingenious trick for making the egg floss that I had to try out. Peter learnt how to devein prawns from Mum too.

===============

INGREDIENTS

BUTTER PRAWNS
10 smallish sized prawns
2 tablespoons standard plain flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups (500 ml) cooking oil

EGG FLOSS
7 egg yolks
2 tablespoons evaporated (carnation) milk
100 grams (3.5 oz) butter
Small handful of curry leaves
3 red chillies
3 garlic cloves
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/2 cup (125 ml) cooking oil

NB: You also need a ziplock bag and a thick needle

ADDITIONAL SAUCE
Approx. 1 1/2 cup (375 ml) evaporated (carnation) milk
1/2 a tomato
Pinch of salt
Pinch of coriander powder
Pinch of sugar
Sprinkle of white pepper
Small cube of butter
A few curry leaves

We created this new series while being in lockdown so we hope you enjoy learning how to cook together with us and this video on how to make Malaysian butter prawns and egg floss. Let us know if you attempt the recipe!

EPISODE 2: Butter cake birthday cake with buttercream icing

Peter tries baking for the very first time. He learns to bake an easy birthday cake recipe given to us by our very good friend (thanks Kersh!). It's a butter cake recipe topped with butter cream icing and it's a delicious buttery combo.

We baked this cake for our Mum's birthday, surprising her after dinner with our family from around the world on Zoom to all celebrate together during lockdown. Thanks to our cuzzy for organising the Zoom call!

If you're looking for an easy butter cake recipe or a simple birthday cake recipe, give this a try. We also cover a very easy buttercream icing recipe too.

for this particular road trip escapade we visited the Waikato, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne and Bay of Plenty regions of North Island, NZ.

NZ road trip time again! We had so much fun on our previous Northland road trip that we were itching to do more domestic travel around the North Island of New Zealand while we could take advantage of clear weather spells.

We're slowly working our way to the South Island eventually again too but for this particular road trip escapade we visited the Waikato, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne and Bay of Plenty regions of North Island, NZ.

In this video we visited the town of "trees and champions", Cambridge in Waikato, as well as finally seeing for ourselves the insanely clear, blue waters of Blue Spring in Putaruru. We couldn't believe our eyes how beautiful, pure and clear the water was.

Cambridge is known as the town of "trees and champions" in New Zealand because of its scenic sights but also because it's home to many national sports organisations and events, and a ton of NZ olympic gold medalists too.

After a few hours of driving from Auckland, our first stop in Cambridge was Hanoi Boy. Delicious, fresh Vietnamese street food served out of a food truck. It was so tasty and the perfect meal to rejuvenate us. We both got bun cha which is one of our favourite Vietnamese dishes.

Hanoi boy- Vietnamese Street Food
Address: 9 Albert Street, Cambridge 3434
Hours:
Sunday & Monday Closed
Tuesday & Wednesday 11am–2pm
Thursday - Saturday 11am–8pm

A few minutes drive away we stopped off quickly at Lake Karapiro before we made our way over to the Blue Spring. Note that there is a longer walk you can do along the Waihou River but if you just want to do a much shorter walk and see the Blue Spring sooner, you can park at the Leslie Road car park like we did and go from there.

This vlog kicks off our 4 night mini NZ road trip up north of Auckland as we make our way to the very top of the North Island (Cape Reinga) before returning home down the west coast. We visited a bunch of small towns in the upper Auckland and Northland Region of New Zealand soaking in a whole lot of beautiful countryside and sea views throughout our journey.

We met a bunch of awesome Kiwis along the way and as always made sure to support local New Zealand businesses where we could during our domestic travels too.

In this vlog, we left our family home in East Auckland and began our trip up north to get lunch at Puhoi Valley & Cheese Shop (roughly 40 mins from Auckland city). Shortly after, we stopped by the Honey Centre in Warkworth to pick up a couple of souvenirs before checking into our beautiful lockwood Airbnb lodge in Waiwera. We then ate at a Thai restaurant in Orewa for dinner before turning in for the night given we had a long drive ahead of us the very next day.

We hope you enjoy this three part vlog from our recent mini New Zealand road trip and visit up north!

===============

INGREDIENTS

BUTTER PRAWNS
10 smallish sized prawns
2 tablespoons standard plain flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups (500 ml) cooking oil

EGG FLOSS
7 egg yolks
2 tablespoons evaporated (carnation) milk
100 grams (3.5 oz) butter
Small handful of curry leaves
3 red chillies
3 garlic cloves
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/2 cup (125 ml) cooking oil

NB: You also need a ziplock bag and a thick needle

Approx. 1 1/2 cup (375 ml) evaporated (carnation) milk
1/2 a tomato
Pinch of salt

Aotearoa (New Zealand) is a very popular tourist and holiday destination so we want to share our 10 essential tips to know about New Zealand for those planning to visit (eventually when borders open again) or when we have the Trans Tasman Australia and New Zealand bubble.

We've made many videos in and about New Zealand including NZ travel guides like must do activities, but this video is a quick travel tips summary that we hope will help you if you're planning to visit NZ.

If you're enjoying our videos please remember to hit that thumbs up and leave us a comment, we really enjoy hearing from our viewers :) Plus if you're new to our channel, we hope you'll subscribe and turn on notifications so you can stay up to date with all our latest videos each week. We post a new video every Sunday 11.30am NZT with the occasional midweek bonus ;)

Thank you :D

We started our day off with a quick tour of our Airbnb in Houhora (where we stayed after visiting Cape Reinga) before we made our way over to a hidden gem activity - Wairere Boulders.

In this final vlog of our Northland, New Zealand road trip we made our gradual journey back to Auckland down the west side of the North Island while stopping at a few small towns to enjoy the special sights like Wairere Boulders in Horeke, Hokianga Harbour and the main must do activity on our list - visiting Tāne Mahuta, the largest Kauri tree in NZ.

We continued our mini NZ road trip and made our way to the very top of New Zealand - Cape Reinga. Or to be exact, the northern most publicly accessible point of New Zealand.

Along the way though we grabbed an award winning Moroccan lamb meat pie from Orewa Bakery and visited two other must see places in Northland, Rainbow Falls in Kerikeri as well as 90 mile beach.
