It’s hard to believe that it’s already been more than two years since we first visited Evans and his brilliantly designed 20ft shipping container home. As a retired boat builder, the level of craftsmanship and creativity in his home was truly impressive and now we are excited to be catching up with him again to see how it’s all working out years on.

Now in a new location his tiny container house has taken on a completely different look. It now sits as part of a small complex of 3, 20ft shipping container where one is a home, one an office and the other a workshop. With some landscaping and construction of a wonderful veranda with some impressive views, this shipping container has been completely transformed into a home.

Nestled in the bush with landscaped grounds, this tiny house on wheels looks perfectly at home amongst the beautiful native trees. Although the house was originally designed for just the couple, with a baby on the way they have modified the home to make it perfectly suited for family life and have even managed to include a wonderful tiny nursery.

I’m always amazed at how people can turn shipping containers, hard, cold metal boxes, into some of the most beautiful, warm and welcoming homes. That’s exactly what this young couple from Victoria have done, transforming 3 20ft shipping containers into a wonderful, functional house.

Everywhere you look, Richard and Amy have packed their container home with great small space design ideas, ensuring that within the small footprint of the shipping containers, there is a tremendous amount of home and living space. Just as much thought has been put into the build of the home, with some great choices in materials and construction techniques making this a high performing and well insulating container home.

With wildfires becoming an every more frequent occurrence, it’s important for us to start thinking about fire resistance when designing our homes. The tiny house movement has been a great opportunity for innovation and experimentation. In this video, we visit the tiny house of an Australian builder, Tom and his tiny house on wheels which has been designed to be resistant to forest fires.

Tom’s tiny house is located in Kinglake, just outside of Melbourne, Australia. In 2009, Kinglake was engulfed by some of the worst forest fires in Australian history, claiming the lives of 180 people and a tremendous amount of damage to property. The land where his tiny house is parked is still scared from the flames of those tragic fires.




Inspired to find better solutions for building, Tom has explored various ways of making his incredible off the grid, solar passive tiny house resistant to fires. This includes design elements as well as clever material choices. If you’re considering building a tiny home (or any home for that matter) in an area at risk of wildfires, there are lots of great tips for you to consider in this video.

This tiny house on wheels is something very special. Designed for a family of three, this home was designed with a very clever transforming function. When moved on the roads, it perfectly meets the legal height requirements but once parked up, the roof of the home pops up to create standing room in the sleeping loft.

Constructed entirely as a DIY project, this tiny house was a definite labour of love for Ben and Nat, who had previously had very little construction experience. The finished tiny home gives the family of three everything they need, including a wonderful extra sleeping loft for their daughter Charlie.

Although the tiny home’s build has just been completed, you can see it’s already a great fit for this adventurous young family, especially with the help of the pop top roof!
